Belize City

Belize City is the commercial and social center of the country, established as such in the early 1700's by the buccaneer Baymen of St. George's Caye. Belize City is a bustling metropolis with a population of over 70,000.

The international airport (Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport for Belize is located in Belize City. Philip S. W. Goldson is about 30 minutes drive from Belize City's center.

You will find the climate in Belize City to be warm all year long, with average temps of 72 degrees in the dry season and up to 88 degrees in the rainy season.

Historical sites include Government House, which was once the dwelling of the appointed Governor but is now a museum, and St. John's Cathedral, which was built in 1812.

Albert Street is the commercial district, where you will find large stores,  banks, and many smaller gift and souvenir merchants.

Battlefield Park is a lovely place to spend an afternoon, and you will find an international  melange of food vendors to sample nearby.

If you want to get out of Belize City, use the taxi, bus, or even the little airplanes which take you to other destinations in Belize for less than US$100.

Belize City is a great travel hub to the rest of Belize. Most expats agree that Belize City itself is a dangerous, high crime area, and recommend only traveling to Belize City to catch a plane to somewhere else, but give glowing reports to the rest of the country, such as Ambergris Caye, Placencia, and Corozal.
